We recently convened two coordinated, complementary workshops at the University of La Laguna in Tenerife on May 20 and 21 to explore the present status and future trajectory of biodiversity within the Canary Islands. These sessions were:

Workshop 1: Canary Island Biodiversity Today
This session discussed current biodiversity monitoring efforts in the Canary Islands. Through participatory sessions, the workshop created space to exchange experiences, identify needs and opportunities, and explore the role of Essential Biodiversity Variables in island contexts. The discussions opened a dialogue on how global biodiversity monitoring frameworks can be connected to local island realities.

Workshop 2: The Future of Canary Island Biodiversity
This session looked ahead to emerging environmental pressures and future trajectories. Key discussions centered on which positive futures we can envision for the biodiversity of the Canary islands, how it can be safe-guarded for future generations, and identifying where and how Canary Island nature should be protected and utilized in a sustainable way.

The workshops successfully brought together over 20 experts across the archipelago to network, exchange knowledge, and develop an in-depth understanding of critical local challenges. Collectively, these discussions helped shape strategies for a future where both biodiversity and society can thrive, while firmly aligning conservation in the Canaries with global initiatives.
